Mango dal

Ingredients:

1 cup yellow split peas (toor dal)
1/2 green, unripe mango, peeled and cut into 1 inch pieces or cubes.
3 tsp salt (adjust to taste)
1/4 tsp turmeric powder
2 tsp red chili powder
1 Tbsp clarified butter (ghee)/oil
1/4 tsp mustard seeds

Method:

Cook the yellow split peas with enough water till almost or 3/4 cooked. It will take approximately 30 to 45 min to cook over the stove. Add the mango pieces and cook further till the mango is well cooked and tender. By then the split peas will also be cooked well. Add as much water as needed to make it gravy like/dal like in consistency. Add the salt, turmeric powder, red chilli powder and bring it to another boil and remove from heat. Heat the clarified butter/oil in a small saucepan. When hot add the mustard seeds. After they pop pour this over the cooked split yellow peas and mix well and serve with plain, cooked, white or brown rice.
